MORE ABOUT OUR STORY
The year is 2032 and Texas, under the leadership of extremists, has managed to secede from the Union. With the formation of a New Republic (or NROT for its sycophants), there’s a new law of the land: childless women over the age of 35 are now deemed “Redundant” and will be put to death. The stage has been set for a grim Handmaid’s Tale-esque story…but, surprise!
-- This is a comedy!
In the upheaval, four city gals and former college roommates – successful in their careers as professors, engineers, policy wonks, and big-time social media influencers, but not quite killin’ it in the traditional pursuit of marriage and motherhood – find themselves trapped in NROT. Their solution? Hide out in an isolated, off-the-grid Texas ranch until the whole thing “blows over.” How hard could ranch life be?
They find out when they lose their food supply to wild hogs, encounter inhospitable soil for gardening, experience a tornado that takes out their electricity, and so on….
Each of these boss babe besties deals with the challenges differently. KENDRA, a historian and avowed pacifist, studies ancient war tactics in an effort to ward against any potential intruders. ELEANOR, whose love of whiteboards and chore maps only rivals her fear of longhorns and falling short of perfection, appoints herself ranch mom and leader, without grasping what that truly entails. LOIZA, reeling from her recent narrow escape from post-secession society and dogged by nightmares, uses her engineering aptitude to bolster the workings of the ranch, while secretly plotting her liberation. And CASSIDY is in straight denial, coming off of an addiction to a social media ecosystem that can no longer fulfill her. Their opposing worldviews drive the women to self-discovery through camaraderie and conflict.
Right when they think they’re finding their stride working as a team, a MAN arrives. …Not just any man – an ally! His arrival challenges each character’s self-appointed role on the ranch and even exposes the cracks in each woman’s personal identity. But just as they begin to trust and open up to the Man…they accidentally kill him.
Truly on their own now, and grappling with the existential consequences of their life decisions, the women must choose to stay or go. But before they can leave, they’re faced with one last challenge together: fend off a band of bloodthirsty NROT rebels, Home Alone-style.
Lady Kings of Texas moves quickly, punctuated with laugh-out-loud story points in a wild ride that will surprise, entertain, and tug at the heartstrings. This dark comedy will leave viewers feeling deeply connected to these women; audiences will be smitten with, and inspired by, how female friendships can save us even at our lowest moments. At the same time, it presents the dire potential consequences of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and this country’s continued attacks on women’s reproductive freedom.
